The Stubborn Bunch

I have been an equestrian for 14 years. Many of us long time equestrians have horses. Probably even multiple horses. I am in that same “multiple horse” boat.

I currently have three horses: Phoenix, Angel, and Smokey. Phoenix is actually mine, and the other two are my boyfriend Travis’, all three are mine to train.

Phoenix is a 10 year old paint who I have had for four years. He is my horse of a lifetime. Angel and Smokey are both in their twenties, and have had no formal training whatsoever. Angel is the black and white, beautiful paint mare in the picture above; Smokey is the grey gelding standing right behind her.

I enjoy working with them all however, there is always a catch. Both of Travis’ absolutely adore him, and would go to the ends of the earth for him. When I mount up, they don’t move at all. I have tried every approach in the book to making them move off my leg to no avail while Travis is the knight in shining armor. It is rather pathetic to watch. I try very hard to make them work, and I get nothing, and he gets on and it is like they are perfectly trained! Sometimes I stop to wonder if it is simply because they just love Travis that much. I am left completely dumbfounded.

Has anything like this ever happened to any of you? As frustrating as it can get, it is truly comical and always makes me laugh. I would love to hear all of your stories about horses that do things like this and how you overcame training obstacles. I would love to know I am not alone here!

Thanks for reading my very first blog. I promise as I learn this I will get better at it!
