The American rock band New Found Glory did their bit for the animal kingdom recently by saving the life of a one-year old horse who was set to be slaughtered. Despite the horse’s young age, it was a veteran of the racetrack and had been sentenced to death. For the relatively low price of $350, the famous band, formed in 1997 in Coral Springs, Florida, purchased the horse thus saving her from death.
The horse in question is a thoroughbred mare and was, in fact, named New Found Glory in honor of the band. Chad Gilbert, lead guitarist and founding member of New Found Glory, spotted an advertisement for the auction of the horse on the internet. Upon learning that New Found Glory, the horse, was to be slaughtered the following morning, Gilbert took it upon himself to save the mare and find her a safe home for the rest of her days.
Gilbert posted the story on his Twitter feed, which is where he discovered the horse in the first place. After buying the horse, he and the band worked with the animal rights association Freedom4Horses, a group dedicated to looking after horses and putting an end to unnecessary horse slaughter. The charity group works with many horses in similar conditions to New Found Glory and relies on public donations to pay for the food and medical expenses that these injured horses need.
The veteran horse is currently located in Texas after being saved by the rock group. Freedom4Horses have promised to update their Twitter feed with images as the horse hopefully makes a complete recover and has publicly thanked the band for saving her. Chad Gilbert himself says that he hopes the whole band will be able to head down to the stables and meet the horse in real life as soon as possible.
Since the incident took place, a YouCaring page has been set up by the Freedom4Horses association in order to raise funds for the proper food and veterinary care that the horse needs. The people at Freedom4Horses have explained via their Twitter feed that the horse has protruding ribs and spine due to malnourishment and poor care, so she is evidently in need of some good nutrition and some caring people to look after her. Fortunately, the charity has plenty of experience in caring for horses like New Found Glory and, with donations provided by the public, should be able to help the horse recover to a perfectly healthy state.
It’s always nice to see stars doing their bit for animals or people in need. Rock bands, in particular, often sing about the problems in the world so it’s good to see them putting their values into action and saving the life of an animal. To track the progress of New Found Glory’s recovery, follow the Freedom4Horses Twitter feed. Let’s hope this veteran mare can make a fantastic recovery and enjoy a calm and happy life.
