Reiki is a natural healing method thousands of years old; translated the word 'Reiki' means 'universal life force energy'. It is an intelligent form of energy that aids the bodies natural self-healing process.
A practitioner will go through a series of attunement to become a healer and to work with this energy. Once attuned, the practitioner can channel this through the body, and out into those of which are receiving a treatment.
Working with the Chakras, or energy centres of the body, it works by bringing the body back in to alignment and heal the body on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. There are countless benefits of this non-invasive treatment, including removal of energy blockages, aiding the relief of physical pain and ailments, accelerates the bodies self-healing process, aids the relief of stress and tension, creating a state of calm and relaxation, just to name a few.
As we are aware, vocally, we can't understand horses, however we can listen to them. We watch their behavior and the way they move their ears, the brace in their body when they see a plastic bag rolling along the floor, and for those all important signs of relaxation after that has passed
But what about the things that we can only feel? Horses, especially those that have come from rough handling or mistreatment will react and behave very differently to those that have had the benefit of a good start in life, but some may not show it through their body and their obvious behavior. They can become introverted and shut-down, with a glazed look in their eye.
Incorporating Reiki in to training sessions, or as a treatment on its own, I have found to be invaluable in helping horses such as these. By helping to relieve energy blockages caused by emotional baggage from past experiences or current situations, it is very rewarding to see the horse start to engage with you, 'coming back to life' and to be part of the conversation again.
On the surface, horse trainers and owners around the world can work and adapt their methods to benefit the horse and in turn, make steady and positive progress. However, the world works on a deeper level than what we understand, or even what some of us want to believe.
When it comes to the horse, perhaps thinking outside the box of what could best benefit them, regardless of our own thoughts and perceptions, to ensure their path forward.
After all, energy is us, and all around.
