Training Calendar

Hi “Of Horse,” audience, us Pony Bloggers Gucci, Sweetsie, and Leggs are here again to discuss flat work exercises. Every horse can benefit from flat work and we have come up with a fun way to incorporate it into your daily riding routine.

Do you ever find yourself not sure what to work on while riding? Many riders do fall into such a rut. Walk, Trot, Canter, and reverse, Walk, Trot, and Canter etc. No worries we have devised a great plan. Please note, everything must begin with a plan.

The Pony Blogger Plan includes a flat work exercise calendar. Each day contains the routine and riding exercise to work on for that day. We fill in each week on a monthly basis. The reason we do it this way is to learn what needs more or less work in the months ahead.

Please work with your trainers on an individual plan for you and your horse. Every rider is at his or her own level and that goes for the horses also. Please also remember to include a day off as well. We all do need a break from each other and a day to just be horses.

Since we all know that horses and riders benefit from flat work here are some suggestions to include in a typical workweek. Transitions, quality transitions, between and within the gaits. Focus on being correct with your aids. Expect the correct response from your horse. For example, if Tuesday’s schedule includes trot sets or trot and canter sets-do them correctly. Each activity for every given day should be practiced the correct way. Include shoulder in, leg yielding, and bending. Caveletti Work is a great idea for one of your weekday exercises.

Keep the week interesting and fun. Do not make a drill for yourself or our mount. And don’t forget to be flexible. Wednesday might include a farrier or vet visit and a workday for persons and the calendar might say gymnastic pole work. No worries make Wednesday Thursday or vice versa. Keep it simple and sane for yourself. The calendar is yours to use an advantage too for your riding not as an added stressor.

Plan your month with your horse by assessing your strong points ad weak points. Discuss it with your trainer. I Sweetsie have a different workweek than my sisters. I am a barrel racer and they both jump fences. However flat work exercises benefit all disciplines. The Dressage exercises help me carry myself correctly and help my sisters in between fences. Since we are all different with very different riders some of our exercises will vary. Flat work is in everything we do and the calendar keeps our persons alert to our individual needs each and every week. Make yours today and Happy Riding Everyone!

Yes! Send me a full color horse trailer brochure from Featherlite.
