Sponsored Riders

The equine world is filled with numerous sponsorship opportunities.  Many companies offer riders sponsorship patches - displaying the company logo - discounts on products, entry fee compensation and more in exchange for publicity and advertising from the sponsored rider.  Sponsors receive numerous applications and the selection process can be difficult.  Many riders apply for these highly sought after positions.  In order to stand out during the process, here are some things to consider.

A sponsored rider is an advertisement for that company.  Companies seek riders who conduct themselves professionally both on and off the horse, and that display good sportsmanship at all times.  Companies seek riders that are in the spotlight; that doesn’t necessarily mean winning all the time.  A rider who conducts him or herself well and manages their riding well is a big plus to companies.  They want the person that is going to have the ability to market their product.

Once selected as a sponsored rider, there are responsibilities that go beyond just wearing a patch.  Communicating with your sponsor on a regular basis is important.  Take responsibility for the brand you are representing and stay on top of new developments.  Think of ways to help the company sell their brand and do it.  This includes posting on social media often, checking the company website, and promoting as much as possible.

Many companies offer the chosen sponsored rider a contract.  Read it and be sure you can take on the responsibility of a sponsored rider.  Sponsorship is about a partnership between the sponsored rider and the company.  Sponsorship only works and gets renewed if both parties are working together.

Most importantly, sponsored riders need to be passionate about the product they are representing.  Commitment to the product makes the sponsored riders job fun and easy.  So head out and seek the companies that you are excited about!

Awesome article. I hope once my showing career kicks off I can have a sponsorship, but as you said here, one must be cautious. Thank you!
