Experience a Picturesque Horse Riding Opportunity on the Balearic Islands

There is a small cove in Menorca that is hounded by tourists and locals during the hot summer months but come April, this stretch is always left alone, with a few horse riders now getting an opportunity to enjoy picturesque rides in this area.

The History of Cami de Cavalls

The Camí de Cavalls, an ancient route that has existed for many years, goes right round this island. Known to be 185 km in length, it is believed to have been built way back in the 1300s as a means of defence. This path joined the fortresses and watchtowers that were built along the coastline, many of which still survive.

Although it soon fell into disrepair, it was restored in 2010 and soon began to be used as a hiking, horse riding and mountain biking trail.  In addition to that, this year tourists and visitors will have the opportunity to try out part of this route while being housed in a boutique hotel.

The Route and its Bounty

An entire circuit round the Cami de Cavalls takes about a week on horseback, however, the sights are just magnificent for a person who loves the outdoors. Divided into a number of stages, the trail in the north of the island is rugged and goes past red beaches and volcanic outcrops. The Binimel-la beach is a famous point for snorkelling.

In order to experience a pleasurable horse riding experience on the Balearic Islands, the long beach of Cala Pregonda is the place to head down to, with a trail that takes you through woodlands. By heading down to the south, you can enjoy a pleasurable canter through wild flowers of vibrant colours and sweet smelling Mediterranean herbs. This cliff-side ride can be quite an adventure for those who like to get their adrenaline pumping.

Horse Riding Deals and More

Most of the horses and mares that you get display a sure step on rocky trails and are very responsive to the rider the entire time. Rutas Ecuestres, the riding company that hosts these rides, are known for their beautiful Menorquin horses, which are indigenous to this island.

Most riding packages come with meals provided so a picnic near the Cavalleria lighthouse can be worth it. The best part however, is that this isn’t the only thing to enjoy here. If you head to the top of the hill in Alaior, you get to enjoy a trail that is surrounded completely by vineyards. You can even choose to cycle around the place and then enjoy some R & R in the rustic Menorcan cottages.

In addition, you can take a drive down to the capital, Mahon, and can spend some time exploring the boutiques and bars that line this city. The avarcas, or sandals, that are sold here, are cheap and worth buying.

Just like the horse riding trails, which allow you to experience a picturesque horse riding opportunity on the Balearic Islands, that were custom made about 7 centuries ago, these are some of the traditions in Menorca that have proven to survive the test of time.
