Back in Training

Winter is over everyone and its time to get us horses back in work. I am Baby Sweets and you might remember me from my past blog, Barrel Racing Issues from the Horse’s Perspective. Yes, that’s me, and its time for me to get back to what I do best, barrel racing. As most of my equine partners and I have had this winter off to relax, be horses, and give our hard working muscles time to repair. Now is the time to get back in shape and back in the game. I have some important tips to get us back in training safely and effectively. First and foremost, please be patient with us. After having the winter off it takes us a little time to get back into the mental swing of things. I , myself, am a little more active and reactive. I can’t seem to keep quite as still in the cross ties, and I fidget much more than usual. Thank goodness, my person stays patient with me and quiets me. My person remembers to stay calm herself and not rush things, she knows us horses react so much to what the person is feeling. This is important to remember. And it’s a gradual increase in training sessions each week. Start out with walking and long trotting us first. Notice how we are doing listen to our breathing, feel us sweating and work us accordingly. If you have to wait and skip a show because you feel we are not in shape yet-do it. Always remember to listen to your gut and listen to us. These two concepts working together create the right decision. Doing it right the first time helps keep us healthy mentally and physically longer. There is always a barrel show or jumping show (have to put that one for my sister-she is a jumper). Get us there prepared. The time people take to care and prepare us for our adventures together keeps us loving what we do. See you all at the show grounds…
